Ingrown hair is not a skin ailment but causes severe problems in man and sometimes in women. The skin becomes inflamed, red, painful and often bumpy. A barely visible hair appears within the bumps. This skin condition is generally known as razor bumps. Technically, razor bumps result from a curly hair growing out of the skin, curling around and then growing back in. Ingrown hairs result from cutting the hair too short. These bumps often leave dark marks on the skin for many months and sometimes even cause scarring. Razor bump is closely related to shaving so in case of men, it appears in neck and face. In women underarms, legs and bikini area are the commonly affected areas.
Often ingrown hair disappears on its own. The hair can be pulled out of the skin carefully with the help of tweezers also. In sever case depilatory creams or electrolysis can be used to remove hair. Topical antiseptics are used to prevent infection. However following proper shaving techniques can prevent ingrown hair problems.
- Electric razor does not shave too close to the skin as the blades of the wet razors do. In electric razors the blades are not very close to the skin so there is lesser chance that the sharpened ends of the hair will enter the hair follicle.
- Avoid using alcohol based shaving products that makes the skin dry. Rather use a shaving gel which has lubricating agents specially formulated for sensitive skin. A good gel minimises the friction associated with shaving and reduce the likelihood of ingrown hairs and skin irritation.
- Shave in the direction of hair growth (go with the grains). It prevents the hair from cutting too short. For men it means shaving is downwards on the cheeks, chin, and moustache areas and upwards on the neck. For women this means shaving downwards on the legs.
- Damp the beard fully before shaving. It is easy to cut the wet hair than the dry one. While using razor on the dry hair, it gets pulled up from the hair follicle and then coils beneath the skin surface after the cut. So, it is advised to moisten the hair five minutes before shaving.
- Avoid pulling the skin while shaving. If the skin is stretched tight the hairs actually protrude out a bit farther than when the skin is relaxed. It results in cutting the hair too short.
- Avoid repeating the strokes in the same area. Repeated shaving strokes increase the risk of ingrown hairs and skin irritation.
Daily skin care routine like cleansing, moisturizing toning helps the skin to remain soft and opens the clogged pores. Exfoliate using a gentle scrubbing pad. This will help you to remove the barriers which prevent the hair from coming out of the skin. Some home remedies can help you to get relief from razor burns. Apply a mixture of mash strawberries and sour cream on the hands and feet. Leave it for 10 minutes then rinse off. It will relieve the area from razor burn. To relieve the skin off burning sensation, dissolve two aspirin in water and make a paste. Apply it on the affected area.
